It was developed to achieve two objectives – 1) De-restrict the turbo inlet path. 2) Maintain low inlet temperatures. This intake system has been developed to offer the highest possible flow rate whilst maintaining the lowest intake temperatures possible. Each component has been designed to provide the turbo with a smooth and free-flowing path. The intake tube has an internal diameter of 103mm or just over 4″ and has a smooth curvature from the filter housing all the way to the turbo inlet. The filter itself has been specifically designed for this intake and has a huge outer diameter of 210mm or 8.3″ with a filtration surface area of over 130,000mm^2. The patented Venturi housing has been designed to provide the maximum internal volume possible for the RS3 engine bay space available and provides laminar flow to the turbo tube. Finally, the duct seals the filter opening to the front slam panel but is not restricted by just the stock entry feed. We have lifted the front of the duct to now provide an extra opening behind the hood which is equivalent to an extra 7″ diameter hole for the intake to draw from. This headlamp duct replaces the OEM headlamp and seals against our RS3 intake for a true RAM-AIR configuration with a direct cold air feed to the filter. The duct follows the same lines as the stock headlamp and features two carbon air guides to channel airflow to the filter. It also has vents on the surface which is perpendicular to the oncoming flow to prevent drag. Tested on track at speeds over 190mph we have ensured that the advantage of the air feed outweighs any additional drag for a net gain in track times. Since this duct replaces the main intake duct inside the engine bay against the slam panel – this area now remains open as a source of cooling for the engine itself. With the car in motion, external air flows into the grill and through the stock openings over the engine for an extra cooling effect. The E9X stock airbox system is a brilliantly designed intake with an excellent flow path and feed system for ambient air. However on closer inspection, there are restrictions in the inlet tube connecting the airbox to the inlet manifold. By redesigning the tube yet maintaining the airbox, we have been able to allow the V8 engine to breathe with greater efficiency and therefore gain power. In addition to the new tube design, we also identified a further restriction in the air feed system. To overcome this we designed a scoop to allow an increase in airflow through the airbox. It was developed to achieve two objectives – 1) Maintain low inlet temperatures. 2) De-restrict the turbo inlet path. The first objective was met by enclosing the filter inside a carbon airbox and using the stock seal against the hood to block out the heat soak from the engine. Since the intake sits directly behind the radiator it is crucial that the filter is not exposed which would result in a loss of power through high IAT. The second objective was met by removing the flexible tubing and optimising the inlet path with a Venturi stack connected directly to the filter. Below is the dyno graph for the stage 2 car which had the same tune on all runs and only the airbox was changed. Importantly the hood was closed for all runs to simulate road conditions. Dyno testing with the hood open - especially with open cone style intakes does not give a reliable indication of how the intakes are affecting power. On the road the hood is closed and so all the heat from the turbos is trapped in the engine bay. On the C63S this is intense heat which is why a sealed system is so crucial. Dyno testing an open cone system with the hood open will yield gains but once on the road the heat soak will cause a significant detriment to the power with the open cones sucking in the hot air. With higher air temperature being less dense, the turbos will not make as much boost resulting in lower power. Furthermore, once the car is accelerating and the open cone intakes have pulled through the standing hot air present, they will continue to pull in the heat generated by the engine and turbos as they spool. With the engine under load and accelerating, turbos produce a lot of heat which can even be seen with the hot sides glowing red.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHere it can be seen with our fully sealed system that the power increases linearly after 4800rpm where the airflow demand increases and the stock airboxes become a restriction. Heat and Volume are the main considerations when designing an intake for turbocharged engines. In the Supra, the intake system is located next to the exhaust manifold which rapidly heat soaks the engine bay. High temperatures are detrimental for engine performance as the turbo would have to build boost with heated, less dense air and so the only way to ensure IAT’s are kept to a minimum is for a fully sealed intake. The stock convoluted intake tube is replaced with a smooth carbon tube which is also larger in internal volume with a starting internal diameter of 111mm (4.4″) smoothly tapering down to match the turbo inlet. The tube provides a smooth path from the filter to the turbo inlet. The flow path from the filters to the turbo inlets is very direct and does not change direction as abruptly as the usual OEM airbox designs. So instead of a complete redesign, we focused on improving the OEM airbox with the less restrictive flow and improved temperature efficiency. Eventuri has developed replacement drop-in filters made from non-woven mesh which have a much higher flow rate as compared to the stock paper filters. To help reduce inlet air temperatures and force air into the airbox we designed large front scoops which sit behind the grills. Heat and Volume are the main considerations when designing an intake for turbocharged engines. In the G20, the intake system is located next to the exhaust manifold which rapidly heat soaks the engine bay. High temperatures are detrimental for engine performance as the turbo would have to build boost with heated, less dense air and so the only way to ensure IAT’s are kept to a minimum is for a fully sealed intake. This however, results in a restriction with only one stock air feed to draw air in from.
